BMW BRAKE WARNING LIGHT RESET - Sunroof Repair

*This is how to make the BMW reset tool that you will need*
First you will need to go to the hardware store or Radio Shack store and pick up supplies shown in this picture and they can help you out.
Grounding pin seven (7) of the diagnostic connector would reset the service lights. I found that grounding pin seven (7) for ~3 seconds applied to an oil service reset and that ~9 seconds applied to the inspection service reset.

Be sure to ground the correct pin number! Damage Can Occur if incorrect procedures are done!

You will need:

Make a wire jumper tool using a solid copper Mueler alligator clip and banana plug (male pin) that would accommodate the diagnostic female pin.

Rather then short the two pins within the diagnostic connector, you attach the alligator clip to engine ground and connect the male pin to diagnostic pin seven (7) (less chance for error). It also embedded a 470 ohm resistor in series within the banana plug.

This limited the current to ~25 ma. in case you went to the wrong pin. As a side note, the reset on an F 100 jet engine diagnostic unit is defined as 50 ohms or less to ground for a specified time.

Use any of the following at your own risk.

All models built prior to 1987 have type “A” style.
All models built 1989 to 2000 have the “B” style diagnostic plug.

For cars with the 15 pin diagnostic connector

This is for older model BMW’s cars that have a 15 pin connector.

You need to put your key into the ignition to position 2 (when all of the inspection lights are lit). Then take your tool and ground pin 7. You do this by taking the pin side of the new tool and plugging it into pin 7. Then take the banana clip and connect it to a good ground. This would be any bolt that has not been painted. Ground pin 7 for 3 seconds and this will reset your oil service light. For a service inspection do the same thing but ground pin 7 for 12 seconds.

For cars with the 20 pin diagnostic connector

For 20 pin connectors you need to do the same thing which is ground pin 7. The only difference is you must ground it for 3.25 seconds for an oil service and 11 seconds for an inspection.

Turn off your car. Then turn the car back on and you see 15,XXX miles till your next inspection. This means that you have this many miles till your next service. Remove the tool and replace the diagnostics connector cap to just like it was.

New 2001 and up E38, E39, E46, E52 and E53 Production date: E46 from 9/99 and E38, E39, E53 from 9/00 On 2001 vehicles without the diagnostic port in the engine compartment, the use of the reset tool is not possible. The service indicator may be reset using the reset mode in the instrument cluster.

• Ignition key must be off

• Press and hold the trip odometer reset button in the instrument cluster (left button), and turn the ignition key to the position 1 (first on click).

• Keep the button pressed for approx. 5 seconds until one of the following words appear in the display: “Oil Service” or “Inspection”, with “Reset”. The service due is shown with “reset” if the coded minimum consumption limit has been reached and resetting is possible. If “reset” is not shown, the minimum limit has not been reached and resetting is not possible.

• Press and hold the reset button again until the word “Reset” begins to flash.

• While the display is flashing, press the left button briefly to reset the service interval. After the display has shown the new interval the following will appear: “End SIA”. The system can only be reset again after 2.5 gal (10 liters) of fuel have been consumed.

BMW BRAKE WARNING LIGHT RESET

Make sure that you replaced the sensor and the brake pads if you did not replace the sensor or pads this will not work. Turn the key to position two (when all of the inspection lights are lit), leave it in this position and leave your driver’s door open a few seconds (between 15 to 90 seconds depending on your car) and it magically resets. If that did not work turn the key to position two and push down on the brake then turn the key off and check to see if it turns off (door must also be open). If this still does not work press down on your brake (hold it pushed down) and turn the key to position two and wait until it turns off. If none of these work please go back and check that you installed the sensor correctly.
